Why total interest matters as much as the monthly payment

Two loans with very different total costs can have similar-looking monthly payments if their terms differ enough. A longer term spreads the same loan amount over more months of interest charges, lowering the monthly payment but often substantially raising the total amount you pay over the life of the loan. This calculator shows both figures together so a lower payment doesn't hide a much higher total cost.

THE CALCULATIONPayment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)⁻ⁿ)

P is your loan amount, r is your monthly interest rate (APR ÷ 12), and n is your total number of monthly payments (years × 12).

Worked example: financing a $25,000 system

EXAMPLE

A $25,000 system, no down payment, 6.5% APR over 15 years

Suppose your solar installer quotes a $25,000 system cost with no down payment, financed at 6.5% APR over a 15-year term, and you estimate your electricity bill savings at $150 per month once the system is running.

  1. Loan amount: $25,000 − $0 = $25,000.
  2. Monthly rate: 6.5% ÷ 12 ≈ 0.5417%.
  3. Number of payments: 15 years × 12 = 180.
  4. Monthly payment: ≈ $217.78.
  5. Net monthly cost: $217.78 − $150 ≈ $67.78.

Over the full 15-year term, the total amount paid comes to about $39,200 — the original $25,000 loan amount plus roughly $14,200 in interest.

Result: about $217.78 per month, $14,200 in total interest, and a net monthly cost of about $67.78 after estimated savings.

Comparing loan terms

Run the calculator a second time with a different term length — say, 10 years instead of 15 — to see the tradeoff directly. Shorter terms raise the monthly payment but can cut total interest substantially, since the balance is paid down faster and accrues interest for less time overall. There's no universally correct choice; it depends on how much monthly payment you're comfortable with versus how much total interest you'd rather avoid.

How is my monthly solar loan payment calculated?

This calculator uses the standard loan amortization formula: your loan amount (system cost minus down payment) times your monthly interest rate, divided by one minus your monthly interest rate raised to the negative number of payments. It's the same formula used for mortgages and car loans, just applied to your solar system's cost.

What interest rate should I use?

Use the APR (annual percentage rate) quoted by your lender or installer's financing partner, not a teaser or promotional rate that changes later. Solar loan APRs commonly range from about 5% to 9% depending on your credit, the lender, and whether the loan is secured against your home.

What's a typical solar loan term?

Common terms are 10, 15, 20, and 25 years. Shorter terms have higher monthly payments but far less total interest; longer terms lower the monthly payment but can substantially increase the total cost of the loan, so it's worth comparing a couple of term lengths.

Should I make a down payment?

A larger down payment reduces your loan amount, which lowers both your monthly payment and total interest paid. Compare the return from reducing loan interest against other uses for that cash, such as an emergency fund or higher-interest debt.

What is net monthly cost, and why does it matter?

Net monthly cost is your loan payment minus your estimated monthly electricity bill savings — it shows what solar actually costs (or saves) you each month, not just the loan payment in isolation. A positive net monthly cost means you're paying more than you're saving; a negative one means solar is already cash-flow positive.

Does this include the federal solar tax credit?

No — this calculator estimates loan payments on the system cost you enter. If you plan to apply the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit or another incentive to pay down your loan principal, run the calculator again with the reduced loan amount to see the effect.

Why is my total interest so much higher on a longer loan?

Interest accrues on your remaining balance every month, so stretching the same loan amount over more payments means more months of interest charges, even though each individual payment is smaller. Comparing total interest, not just the monthly payment, is the clearest way to see a loan's true cost.
